Phil’s Story
Out of nowhere
For Phil, it was just a routine lunch break. On May 30, 2025, he was standing in a coffee shop in The Rocks, waiting for a takeaway coffee, something he’d done countless times before.
‘My cardiac arrest was in a coffee shop in The Rocks while waiting for a takeaway coffee at lunchtime. Apparently I just suddenly went white and dropped to the floor’
There had been no warning.
‘I had no inkling of an issue, having regular exercise and had probably just returned from my usual lunchtime walk around Observatory Hill before returning to work with a cuppa.’ In an instant, everything changed.
Behind the counter, a barista saw what happened, and acted.
“…the barista, Vilu, who had no first aid training, jumped the counter and gave me CPR for almost 10 minutes before the paramedics arrived.”
No formal training, no equipment, the barista acted on instinct and with urgency. Phil found out later Vilu had only seen CPR on TikTok as guidance, and now appreciates more than most that taking any action is better than no action. For nearly ten minutes, Vilu kept going, bridging the gap until help arrived.
Phil doesn’t remember any of it. ‘I don’t remember anything of the event or pretty much the week afterwards.’ What followed was a long and challenging recovery. But slowly, steadily, he found his way back.
‘The next few months were challenging, but I made good progress and am now back to gardening, running workshops and regular exercise. Just recently I shovelled and barrowed a few tonnes of garden mulch.’ It’s an amazing return to normal life that once seemed uncertain.
For Phil, the experience was life-changing. But for his wife, it was something else entirely. ‘I think my wife suffered the most actually, as she had to drop everything to visit me each day, a long trip from the mountains to St Vincent’s, looked after me when I came home and for months was terrified if I was out of sight for just a few minutes. So I purchased a new smartwatch so that my wife could check and reassure herself that I am ok at any time’
Looking back, Phil knows how close it came. A normal day, a familiar routine, a sudden collapse, and one person, willing to step in without hesitation made all the difference. Sometimes, it’s not training or certainty that saves a life. It’s simply the decision to act.
PRECARE thanks Phil for telling his story.
