Courses

For inexperienced providers, getting exposure to circulations supported with extracorporeal support can be challenging and is one of the biggest deficiencies seen in training courses. In developing the training program for novice providers performing pre-hospital ECPR, we developed a porcine model of training to facilitate exposure to the haemodynamic abnormalities that can occur with extracorporeal support. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Establish extracorporeal support (run on to ECMO)
- Prime and initialise the machine
- Troubleshoot common haemodynamic abnormalities including:
- High afterload impeding flow
- Access insufficiency
- No pulsatility
- Differential hypoxia
- Trouble shoot common pump issues including:
- Air entrapment
- Pump failure
- Gas failure
- Hand crank
